Class Descriptions

Creative Movement (ages 3˝ to 5)
Guided in a nurturing environment, Creative Movement explores both the creative and physical dimensions of each child. Activities develop strength, coordination, creative thinking, and expression. Children refine motor skills and explore the creative process through the use of props and imagery. This course will inspire spontaneity and self-expression.

Preparatory Dance (ages 5 to 7)
Bridges the movement ideas between Creative Movement and the school's first level of ballet. Children learn beginning ballet dance technique and basic terminology. Increased levels of concentration and group work will be required while still emphasizing creative expression.

Preparatory Tap (ages 5 to 8)
Bridges the movement ideas between Creative Movement and the school's first level of tap. Children learn beginning tap technique and basic terminology. Increased levels of concentration and group work will be required while still emphasizing creative expression.

Preparatory Jazz (ages 5 to 8)
Bridges the movement ideas between Creative Movement and the school's first level of jazz or hip-hop. Children learn beginning jazz technique and basic terminology. Increased levels of concentration and group work will be required while still emphasizing creative expression.

Creative Modern (ages 7 to 10)
Develops the beginning techniques of Modern Dance including core strength, floor work, movement phrases, improvisation and choreography skills. This class will focus on the younger ages, incorporating elements of creative movement.

Ballet Technique
A clear anatomical ballet technique (i.e. body alignment, turnout, balance) will be taught in all levels of ballet classes. Progression through the levels will bring the student greater understanding of musicality, quality of movement, Épaulement (carriage of the upper body and head), and artistry. *Advancement is by instructor recommendation.

Ballet 1 (ages 8 to 9 meets once a week)
Focuses on the beginning stages of ballet training including ballet positions, primary steps, and beginning movement combinations.

Ballet 2 (ages 10 to 11 meets once a week - 2 sections offered. May take both sections.)
Features a structured ballet class including a full barre, center combinations, secondary steps and center jumps. Students will be introduced to the ideal of artistry.

Ballet 3 (ages 12 to 14 meets three times a week)
Exposes the young student to a variety of steps and artistic ideals. Combinations will build in length and complexity. Basic principles of pointe work start at this age (Students may study pointe work with the recommendation of the instructor. Students taking pointe are required to take 3 ballet classes per week.)

Ballet 4 (ages 15 to 18 meets four times a week)
Further defines artistic ideals while developing technical virtuosity, giving the student professional performance capabilities. Pointe is recommended, but not required. (Students taking pointe are required to take 3 ballet classes per week.)

Jazz 1 (ages 8 to 11), 2/3 (12 to 18)
Features classical and current styles of jazz dance. Dancers build strength, flexibility, basic technique, proper alignment and musicality in a fun, high-energy class.
*Advancement is by instructor recommendation.

Hip-Hop 1 (ages 8 to 11), 2 (ages 12 to 18)
This class will explore the roots of Hip-Hop and emphasize creative self-expression. Dancers will develop technique and musicality while creating original moves and style through freestyle improvisation. From warm-up to cool-down, this class is exciting and energizing! Content is always age appropriate.
*Advancement is by instructor recommendation.

Tap 1 (ages 8 to 11), 2/3 (ages 12 to 18)
Develop the poise and style of Broadway Tap, while executing the beats of Rhythm Tap. Progressive exercises increase the dancer's skill and speed in execution. Learn to make music with your feet!
*Advancement is by instructor recommendation.

Modern 1 (ages 9 to 13), 2/3 (ages 13 to 18)
Develops the technique and aesthetic of Modern Dance including core strength, floor work, movement phrases, improvisation and choreography skills while encouraging creativity in a joyous environment.
*Advancement is by instructor recommendation.

*Placement classes will be offered to determine the appropriate level for each student's skill and ability or placement can be discussed with the instructor.

Drop-in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop, and Modern (Teen/Adult)
Classes are designed to accommodate a wide range of ages, physical skills and dance ability. Steps are broken down clearly and logically in an encouraging atmosphere. Whether a beginner or a returning dancer, our instructors will help you get the most out of each class. Classes are available on a drop-in basis or by purchasing a class card.

Iyengar Yoga (a form of Hatha Yoga)
This class will focus on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of asanas (poses). You will spend 40 to 45 minutes practicing a system of asanas which aim to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well being. The last 12 minutes of class will focus on relaxation, preparing you to go back into your daily routine. This class is available on a drop-in basis or by purchasing a class card.
