Evelyn Doran, First Prize Essay Contest

Congratulations!

by admin on April 30, 2012

Congratulations to Evelyn Doran – First Prize Winner!

“The life of a teenager is tough. In adolescence, you have to deal with school, annoying siblings, chores, and the sudden addition of many more responsibilities. But, unlike most teens, I have something to help me deal with all that: something wonderful and amazing. Unlike most, I have dance. Dance helps me deal with my emotions. It calms me down. It boosts my spirits, and it even helps me brainstorm solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems, because my thoughts are always clearer in the studio. When nothing else works, I know that dance can help me let it all out. It doesn’t matter what I feel; maybe sadness, or fear, or anger or joy; I know that dance can help me show it. Whether it’s school stress or friend drama or family struggles, or even if I’m just overwhelmed, dance helps me through it. When I dance, I put it all out there, and that makes me feel free. And just as the great Martha Graham says, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul.” I believe this – and I believe that through all of us dance speaks. It speaks our emotions, our hopes, our dreams, our desires and our fears. So, if you’re a stressed teen, a scared child, or an overwhelmed adult, I know that dance will help you speak. I know this because, through dance, I speak.”
